The St. Mary community is sometimes described by an old saying about being Catholic: “Here comes everybody”. Whether you measure diversity by economics, generations, cultures or even languages, people of all walks of life are comfortable calling St. Mary’s “home”. St. Mary’s is a place for prayer, for celebrating, and for serving. Come as you are to Mass, for quiet prayer or a visit to the parish offices.
St. Mary Church was formed in 1857 as part of the Diocese of Detroit at the time. (The Diocese of Grand Rapids was established in 1882.) For many, the face of St. Mary’s is our landmark 1873 Gothic-revival church building, one of the oldest extant Catholic Churches in Grand Rapids. The exquisite stained glass windows and beautiful interior create an inviting, holy space. Once a home for the German immigrants of Grand Rapids, St. Mary now serves a diverse population of English and Spanish-speaking Catholics.
Liturgies at St. Mary’s aim to encourage participation! The preaching is relevant to people’s lives, and our music ministry blends many styles—whatever best serves the needs of that liturgy.
