Change to Mass Times | Cambio al horario de las Misas

Dear brothers and sisters,
First and foremost, I’m very excited and honored to be the new pastor of St. Mary’s and St. Adalbert’s. I know I’m stepping into a wonderful history of parishes committed to serving the Lord on the West side of Grand Rapids. I also know that transitions are always difficult, and in particular, transitioning to a new pastor is a difficult time in the life of a parish, as well as difficult for the priest.
Given the difficulty of transitions, I would have preferred to wait before making any major changes to parish life, but unfortunately the reality of moving from two priests to one priest means that there will need to be immediate changes in the weekend Mass schedule. Beginning the weekend of July 5 and 6, the new weekend Mass schedule will be as follows:
- Saturday, 4:00 PM at St. Adalbert (English)
- Sunday, 8:30 AM at St. Adalbert (English)
- Sunday, 10:30 AM at St. Adalbert (English)
- Sunday, 12:30 PM at St. Mary (Spanish)
My first priority is that all in our community have access to Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, in the most Holy Eucharist. Given that Canon law prohibits a priest from celebrating more than 3 Masses on a Sunday and the seating capacity of each church, I believe that this new schedule is the best way to make access to the Mass available to everyone currently attending Mass, as well as giving us room to welcome in our brothers and sisters in the neighborhood who have fallen away from the practice of the faith or who do not yet know Jesus Christ.
In the churches of St. Adalbert and St. Mary, we are gifted with incredibly beautiful buildings, which I sincerely hope will continue to serve as places of worship and encounter with God for many years to come. It is neither my intention nor my desire that either church should close. Although some may no longer have access to their preferred time and place for Mass, a parish is first and foremost a community of the Christian faithful which exists in a particular area. More beautiful than any particular building is the work God does in our souls through the gifts of His Spirit. Even when the normal time and place of worship of a community changes, the gifts with which God has endowed that community are not lost: “For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29); indeed, the gifts of all remain necessary for the building up of the body of Christ, the Church. I hope that the gifts God has given to His people here will continue to bear abundant fruit.
I know this transition will be difficult, and please know that these decisions were not made lightly. I know this news will be received with sadness by many in our community, and rightly so. I sincerely wish we had more priests to serve our parishes in Grand Rapids. All of us would love to be living in an era of flourishing and growth in the life of the Church. But God in His infinite wisdom has called you and me to such a time as this, full of trials and challenges as it is, so that we might become saints. These circumstances do not change our mission, which was entrusted to us by Our Lord Himself: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” Let’s do so, with the help of God, beginning with our neighbors on the West side.
Please know that I have been and will continue to be praying for you, and I humbly ask the help of your prayers as I begin this new assignment. I look forward to seeing you in person and meeting you soon!

Queridos hermanos,
Antes que nada, me siento muy emocionado y honrado de ser el nuevo párroco de Santa María y San Adalberto. Sé que estoy entrando en una hermosa historia de parroquias comprometidas con servir al Señor en el oeste de Grand Rapids. También sé que las transiciones siempre son difíciles, y en particular, el cambio de párroco es un momento difícil en la vida de una parroquia, así como también lo es para el sacerdote.
Dada la dificultad de este tipo de transiciones, hubiera preferido esperar antes de hacer cambios importantes en la vida parroquial, pero lamentablemente, la realidad de pasar de tener dos sacerdotes a uno solo significa que será necesario hacer ajustes inmediatos en el horario de Misas del fi n de semana. A partir del fin de semana del 5 y 6 de julio, el nuevo horario de misas será el siguiente:
- Sábado, 4:00 PM en San Adalberto (inglés)
- Domingo, 8:30 AM en San Adalberto (inglés)
- Domingo, 10:30 AM en San Adalberto (inglés)
- Domingo, 12:30 PM en Santa María (español)
Mi prioridad principal es que todos en nuestra comunidad tengan acceso a Jesucristo, el Pan de Vida, en la Santísima Eucaristía. Dado que el derecho canónico prohíbe que un sacerdote celebre más de tres Misas los domingos y considerando la capacidad de cada iglesia, creo que este nuevo horario es la mejor manera de garantizar que todos los que actualmente asisten a Misa puedan seguir haciéndolo, además de dejarnos espacio para dar la bienvenida a nuestros hermanos del vecindario que se han alejado de la fe o que aún no conocen a Jesucristo.
En las iglesias de San Adalberto y Santa María, tenemos templos increíblemente hermosos, y espero sinceramente que sigan siendo lugares de oración y encuentro con Dios por muchos años más. No es mi intención ni mi deseo cerrar ninguna de las dos iglesias. Aunque algunos ya no podrán asistir a la Misa en el horario o lugar que preferían, una parroquia es, ante todo, una comunidad de fieles que existe en un área determinada. Más hermoso que cualquier edificio es la obra que Dios realiza en nuestras almas por medio de los dones de Su Espíritu. Incluso cuando cambia el lugar o el horario habitual de una comunidad para asistir a la misa, los dones que Dios ha dado a esa comunidad no se pierden: “Porque los dones y el llamado de Dios son irrevocables” (Romanos 11,29); en verdad, los dones de todos siguen siendo necesarios para edificar el Cuerpo de Cristo, que es la Iglesia. Espero que los dones que Dios ha otorgado a Su pueblo aquí continúen dando fruto en abundancia.
Sé que esta transición será difícil, y sepan que estas decisiones no se tomaron a la ligera. Sé que esta noticia será recibida con tristeza por muchos en nuestra comunidad, y con razón. Yo sinceramente desearía que tuviéramos más sacerdotes para servir a nuestras parroquias en Grand Rapids. A todos nos gustaría vivir en una época de florecimiento y crecimiento en la vida de la Iglesia. Pero Dios, en Su infinita sabiduría, nos ha elegido a vivir en estos tiempos, llenos de pruebas y desafíos, para que podamos llegar a ser santos. Estas circunstancias no cambian nuestra misión, la cual nos fue confiada por nuestro Señor: “Vayan y hagan discípulos de todas las naciones.” Hagámoslo, con la ayuda de Dios, comenzando con nuestros vecinos aquí en Grand Rapids.
Por favor, sepan que he estado orando y seguiré orando por ustedes, y humildemente les pido que también oren por mí mientras comienzo esta nueva misión. Me da mucho gusto que pronto podré verlos y conocerlos en persona.
